It operates by interrogating the Active Directory Domain Controller for the username and password and the true last logon time for each domain account.
If a specific account has not been queried for the specified computer name, the true last logon time for the account will be set to the oldest domain computer (defined as the first computer name in the OU where the account was created).
If the specified computer name is not found in the Active Directory domain, the true last logon time for the account will be set to the oldest domain controller.

Real World Example:
Say your IT Department manages two Active Directory domains (DOM1 and DOM2).
Domain1 is your primary domain, Domain2 is your secondary domain.
DOM1 is currently hosting Domain Controllers A and B.
DOM2 is currently hosting Domain Controller C.
Both workstations and domain users are located in an OU named Global in Domain1.
The Global OU is defined in Domon2.
You are creating a simple report that lists the accounts that are at least a year old and mark them as expired.

The Windows Idle Timer is a tool to find out the last logon time and status of your users and computers. It is especially useful for finding out if your users are running their computers for too long, i.e. if they are on idle. To test how long the computer is running for, open the Windows Task Manager and click on the “Start” menu button.
Enter the computers and users names in the fields and click “Search”.
Example:
User01, User02, User03 etc…
Click “Search”.
In this example we would get back the true last logon time for User01, User02 and User03.
To view the last logon time and status of the accounts click on “Details”.
The Windows Idle Timer runs as a scheduled task, so if you don’t want to run it from the menu just go to the Control Panel, “Administrative Tools”, “Scheduled Tasks”, “Add”. Choose the launch path of “C:\WINDOWS\System32\WindowsIdle.exe” and then select the “Triggers” tab and tick the “run when the computer is idle” checkbox and choose “per user” to run it for every user.
If you already have a scheduled task for it and it is not running just click on the “edit” button of the scheduled task and clear the checkboxes for “Start” and “End” and tick “run when the computer is idle” again.
The Windows Idle Timer does not show the user account type when searching for idle computers. For this reason there can be more than 1 idle computer for the same user. If you have more than one computer sitting idle for the same user, True Last Logon will show the last logon time of the last computer that is idle.
While running True Last Logon you can see how long the computer has been running for. To stop the computer from running idle check the “do not show next time” option under the “computer settings” tab.
There are some known issues with the Windows Idle Timer. It is recommended that you clear the computer from any programs or tasks before using this software. The software may not work correctly if it is still running when the computer comes back online.
Do the job correctly with “True Last Logon”. Get all the way to the end of the search results with “True Last Logon Pro”.
