the short-lived three stooges re-union of the 1930s – shemp, moe and curly – was an attempt to save the stooge brand, and the films they made together as the three stooges from 1934 to 1935 were actually more often than not pretty good. none of them can match the comic genius of the original stooges, but for the most part they were pretty good for the times. shemp in particular was a talented actor with a knack for playing sympathetic characters and an easy charm to his personality. the film three little pigskins was one of shemp’s better efforts, he’s especially good as the farmer who gets tormented by his three sons. and curly joe derita was more than a competent foil for moe, and a good second banana for the stooge leader. its a shame that shemp and curly joe never got to play together more often than they did.
the comedian hebard, another of the group’s replacements, had been working for columbia before joining the stooges. the company offered him the lead role in the 1931 film the florodora girl, which was the first of the three stooges shorts he made with shemp, moe and curly joe. this was the first time he ever made a sound film, and it was also the first in which he would play the lead role. he starred as the lead in the first film by columbia’s own chief of production mack sennett, starring mack sennett’s son max, as well as the first three stooges directed by william beaudine. hebard’s inexperience as a movie star, combined with the generally poor quality of the film, resulted in columbia releasing it in a two-reeler, but he was hired on to be the new star of columbia’s series of six shorts that lasted until 1934.
