TORONTO – In a display of stunning ignorance, Toronto city planners expect just a two per cent increase in pedestrian traffic at key intersections.
Tracking the movement of people is now a high priority for the city, according to a new report.
“Each year, this city will see nearly a million more pedestrians,” said Mayor David Miller. “They’ll have to have a place to go, and we’re going to make sure we give them one.”
The report, which was released Thursday, recommends that the city build over 200 kilometres of pedestrian bridges to maintain “densities” of between 200-250 people per kilometre.
The report also outlines a series of new pedestrian crossings, to be built at the busiest intersections citywide.
“Pavement won’t do it for us. You know, for those of you who don’t know, pavement is just the first layer of the road,” explained Miller. “If we’re going to make this work, we have to find a way to connect people with pedestrians on the second and third layer of the road.”
The report has received immediate criticism from Council for not taking a global view of the city’s traffic issues.
“We shouldn’t be dealing with pedestrian traffic alone,” said Coun. Jan De Silva. “We should be thinking about the needs of transit users, cyclists and every other kind of traffic.”
De Silva, whose ward is the intersection of Queen and Spadina, said that the vast majority of people simply don’t see the need to walk even when they’re trying to do so.
“The city planners seem to think that the pedestrians that we actually see are all those people standing in front of our coffee shops,” she said. “The vast majority of people walk everywhere.”
De Silva said a close look at traffic problems in other cities shows that pedestrians are an easy target to ignore.
