In the manufacture of sheet steel, a molten pool of steel is formed in a crucible in the center of a mold cavity of a continuous casting mold. The mold cavity is closed at the top by a bottom and side surfaces which define a thin mold section or mold lining directly above the molten steel pool. Molten steel is drawn from the mold cavity by the shape of the mold lining. The thin shape of the mold lining is sustained by gas pressure within the mold cavity.
As the steel is drawn from the mold cavity, the bottom and side surfaces of the mold cavity sink slightly below the steel pool. In a conventional continuous caster, the bottom surface of the mold cavity decreases in area from the molten pool to the mold lining by an amount such that the steel pool reaches the mold lining before the bottom surface has sunk all the way to the mold lining. A thin strip of steel may therefore be formed in the mold cavity. This steel strip remains pinned to the mold, and as long as the vertical pressure in the mold cavity is maintained the strip remains in place.
The side surface of the mold cavity, however, should sink to the bottom surface of the mold cavity as the steel is drawn from the mold cavity to prevent the molten steel from reaching the side surface of the mold cavity. If the side surface of the mold cavity sinks to the bottom of the mold cavity before the bottom surface has reached the top of the mold lining, a partial transfer of the molten steel to the side surface of the mold cavity may occur. This can result in serious distortions in the final casting.
To prevent this transfer of molten steel to the side surface of the mold cavity, the side surface of the mold cavity is maintained at a constant level above the molten steel pool. This constant vertical position is imposed on the side surface by a variety of means including mechanical, hydraulic and suction forces.
In one conventional caster, a layer of gas-permeable refractory cement is applied to the bottom surface of the mold cavity as the mold bottom surface sinks below the molten steel pool. This layer of refractory cement is sufficiently porous to allow for gas-permeation between the mold cavity and the molten steel, but dense enough to prevent the molten steel from reaching the bottom surface of the mold cavity.
In another conventional caster, a chamber is formed on the underside of the mold lining around the mold cavity. A vacuum is drawn through the chamber to prevent the molten steel from reaching the bottom of the mold cavity.
