When the molten CMAS penetrates into the open pores and/or open vertical cracks of the EBC, it causes Marangoni flow (Ref 3), which contributes to the accumulation of CMAS on the porous zones of the EBCs. The impingement of the temperature gradients created by the Marangoni flow and the high surface energy of the molten CMAS can ultimately lead to the formation of a stable steady-state domino-type reaction between CMCs, as illustrated in Figure 1. The high temperature formed by the reaction can contribute to the growth of the CMAS layer on the EBCs, which ultimately promote the formation of CMAS cracks in the coated region. Since the high-temperature process consumes the CMAS, the growth process of the CMAS layer can be treated as an advection-reaction-diffusion problem. The effects of transport phenomena and temperature on the reaction rates must be accounted for when studying the stability of the steady state. The author found that both the reaction rate, as well as the growth and diffusion behavior, can be explained using the transient analysis approach, which was successfully applied to the study of the overall EBC-CMC reaction process (Ref 5). The author utilized a deterministic model and obtained a solution using a reaction-diffusion reaction-condensation (RDC) model. The RDC model was applied in two steps: (i) the steady-state analysis of the problem was first carried out using a deterministic steady-state equation, followed by (ii) the use of a time-dependent mathematical solution to validate the steady-state analysis results. On the basis of these analyses, the author was able to quantitatively assess the state of the solid CMAS layer, as it grows and diffuses on the EBC surface.
