Debugging a filter expression in sqlite
Using an sqlite object, I’m using a filter to do some work. Is there a way to determine when that filter has been applied, or when the query changed? For example, I’d like to see what the query was when a certain row was updated.
A:
It’s not ideal, but you can set the sqlite Cursor to always return all rows, then examine the results of that. For example:
c = db.execute(“SELECT * FROM whatever…”).fetchall()
assert len(c) == 1
If you really want to see the execution plan for the query (see the sqlite docs on this for various approaches), you can use setrow to create a mock row of some kind, which has a method.cursor() that returns a cursor which will let you inspect the cursor state. For example:
sql_query = “SELECT * FROM whatever…”
cursor = sqlite3.Cursor(db, sql_query)
row = Row(‘row’, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1)
cursor.setrow(row)
row_to_check = cursor.row()
assert row_to_check.id == row.id # Just check that we actually copied the row
This lets you examine the state of the cursor, though if you simply set the row_to_check to a copy of the original row, you might just as well use the original. You can also examine the query state of the Cursor’s.executemany() method by e.g. printing out sql
