From the beginning of the first episode until the end of the last episode, a title sequence plays in regular and slow motion, showing the four kids encounter Slappy on the first part and then Slappy’s rage in the second part. The theme song for the series is a cover of The Velvet Underground’s “New Age” by The Grass Roots. The song, which was written by Lou Reed, is featured in a TV ad for now-defunct Blockbuster Video, and was recorded by The Grass Roots in 1969 and released with the album “Return To New York” (1969). Though it wasn’t part of the original TV series, the song was eventually used as the original theme for the 1999 sequel, The New Nightmare. Some episodes also featured The Grass Roots version of “The Gift” on their ending credits.

When the wolf tries to eat Slappy for the first time, his portrait falls off the wall and hangs by its strings like a kite. Just before the wolf grabs the portrait, the portrait sneaks back up on the wall and Slappy’s portrait falls off and lands in the wolf’s jaws, distracting the wolf so Slappy can grab the kite string. Slappy then yanks on the kite string and flies away, and the portrait falls off the back of the wolf’s head and lands in the wolf’s mouth. The wolf eats the portrait and Slappy falls to the ground, possibly dead. Ren and Helen save him and he tells them they are angels and that they must find the one who made him and make him go away. In the final episode of the series, they find Slappy’s maker, a museum curator. After Ren and Helen dive into his paintings, Ren and Helen can see again, and Slappy and his maker take flight.

The very first episode opens with a title card that reads “Goosebumps! Ahoy! This episode is sponsored by Freakazoid!”. This is a reference to another film by Kevin Smith, and accidentally refers to the cartoon series, in which main characters Slappy and Freakazoid also appear. The episode shows Ren and Helen meeting a Slappy that is more horrifying than his initial appearance. It then turns out that Ren and Helen are brothers.
