“Had the well integrity not failed, then it is more obvious,” Transocean spokesman Terry Williams said in an e-mail. “It is not a foregone conclusion. We are confident that if this well had been operating for the past five and a half years, then it would have been a relatively minor event, and the outcome would be far different than what we are seeing right now.” Hackworth first noticed problems with the second well last year, when a pipeline to transfer oil began leaking. He notified Transocean, who stabilized the problem. Nonetheless, Hackworth fired Hackerman after working under the well manager for two months.
