From a static analysis we can see that Launcher.exe is created using AutoIt. Its main function is Crypt which provides Crypt class routines for encryption and decryption. The scripts also embeds the UrlDownloader.dll which is not required in the final exe.
Additionally, this kind of scripts uses streams to pass the data between Crypt and UrlDownloader. It seems that a stream is a specific and organized sequence of bytes with a name, typically used to send a file.
Next, we extract the strings. Below is the result of that exercise. We see that the downloaded exe is RegistryFiles and drops two other files: my.reg and my.bat. Note that this is how a binary is created: my.reg is created using the registry editor and my.bat contains the RegOpenKey function.
It seemed like we could do better than just letting the victims download the executable. So in one of the other crons that I added to the CRONTAB in October 2019, I used the VBA macro function IpkfHKQ2Sd to decode the file using the VBA decoder in the VBA/Pivot helper. The decoded file is a WPF executable. A better decoder than VBA is Excel because Excel was already installed on the victims’ machines.
Another similarity between the two samples is the use of exe2aut to create the executable. The samples have some minor modifications to the script before the EXE creation. Below is an excerpt of the script from the sample that we are analyzing:
