pharmacopoeial standards are publicly available and legally enforceable standards of quality for medicinal products and their constituents. the british pharmacopoeia is an important statutory component in the control of medicines which complements and assists the licensing and inspection processes of the medicines and healthcare products regulatory agency (mhra) of the united kingdom. together with the british national formulary (bnf), the british pharmacopoeia defines the uks pharmaceutical standards.
the four positive samples of ruyi jinhuang powder from the first lot with labeled as geniposide, glycyrrhizic acid, rheumuloside a and linarin were determined by real-time pcr. we then used its2 sequencing to analyze the composition of the following five products that were detected as mixed products in two different batches in two different lots of ruyi jinhuang powder: sample 1-1 in the first batch, sample 2-2 in the first batch, sample 5-1 in the first batch and sample 6-1 in the first batch, and sample 7-1 in the second batch, and sample 7-2 in the second batch. we also used its2 sequencing to analyze the composition of another five products that were detected as mixed products in two different batches in two different lots of ruyi jinhuang powder: sample 9-1 in the first batch and sample 9-2 in the first batch, sample 12-1 in the first batch and sample 12-2 in the first batch, sample 21-1 in the first batch and sample 21-2 in the first batch, sample 23-1 in the first batch and sample 23-2 in the first batch. these products are all traditional patent medicines without warning labels and geniposide is not listed as an active ingredient in the 2015 edition of the chinese pharmacopoeia. comparing the results of identification of these products by real-time pcr with its2 sequencing, we demonstrated that ruyi jinhuang powder is a potential adulterant in traditional patent medicines. our studies provided a new method for the detection and identification of potentially adulterated chinese patent medicines and should promote the quality and stability of traditional patent medicines.
