The first version was not very powerful, only supporting the display of a single 2D drawing sheet. Subsequent versions were incremental improvements to the original release.
AutoCAD was designed as a sophisticated graphics package, but was often criticized for its poor performance. It was designed to be easy for an average computer user to operate.
In the late 1980s, AutoCAD and other graphics-based tools were first made available on the Apple Macintosh.
The software was originally intended to be a client-server application. However, because AutoCAD was not designed to support a client-server model, the user experience was poor and prevented it from being sold commercially.
In 1985, Autodesk developed a replacement for the client-server architecture called the Network Application Architecture (NAAPI). NAAPI was intended to enable a network-based design environment for users of CAD systems. AutoCAD was the first commercial CAD application to be released with a network-based architecture. NAAPI was developed as part of a client-server architecture as a layer on top of the Graphics Device Interface (GDI) API, and AutoCAD was the first commercial application to make use of it.
NAAPI supported the exchange of files and data through the network. The first NAAPI implementation shipped in AutoCAD as a version 4 upgrade. It was commercially released in 1986.
