It does this by starting with a server that you have access to, and using it to see what servers other people are posting from.
It then checks these servers by trying to log in without authentication and finds out if it can be done successfully.

I have included sources for the news servers I have found so far. These are all free and have there own page on the web but I haven’t added them all to this list yet.

The page also comes with a list of all the servers that people have posted news from.
The application works by trying to log into servers that are known and posting news as it goes along. It will then read news from the servers it has posted from and then try to post news from other servers (these are all listed on the page mentioned above).
Once it has posted news from all the servers it needs, it will post a message telling you that all the news is now available.
The news Finder is Freeware and even if you don’t have the access to one of the free servers (and that is all I can provide at the moment) the application does provide good data so you don’t have to have free access to it.

Newsfinder is intended to be useful for people who are members of dialup bulletin board systems and want to
view and/or download newsgroups (sometimes referred to as “news”) from a news server without having to visit
those sites directly.
Newsfinder Features:
Newsfinder stores its server list in the file: sites.xml.
It stores saved login details for each server in the file: login.xml.
When a new site is added to the list it is checked against the list to see if the default login details for that site
are in the list. If so then it can be skipped.
When a site is removed from the list the saved login details for that site are deleted and should be removed from
login.xml.
The Newsfinder GUI interface is highly interactive. Clicking on links, buttons and text prompts allows you to view
text documents.
You can download the latest news (in text form) of any news server from a menu, and the list of all news servers
(with the latest newsgroup) is displayed in a list so you can browse the list to choose a news server to download
from.
Newsfinder is fully capable of working with a keyboard without any graphics – the whole application is a command line
application.
Newsfinder also optionally allows you to login to news servers by sending a simple e-mail to the administrator.
Newsfinder can parse text files which are written by users. You can read newsgroup text files and parse it into
your own format using the function “import newsgroup text”. This is done automatically if the subject and
author of the newsgroup text file have names listed in sites.xml
If a news server requires a username and password to log in, the username and password are saved in a separate file
called “login.xml” which is stored in the same directory as the application.
Newsfinder has the ability to run as a daemon and listen for news connections.
You can start the daemon from any directory from its command line configuration.
The daemon runs with a higher priority than other programs and does not allow other programs to interrupt it.
Newsfinder will only notify you of your connection attempts if you ask it to.
If an attempt is made to login to a news server which is stored in the list then the daemon will listen for the login
attempt. If it receives such an attempt it will send a formatted e-mail to the mail address specified in “souce
