How to edit a photo in Photoshop without it being in the photo
There are a few ways of editing photos without it being in the photo itself. This article will describe some of these ways, with examples. The methods described are simple, straightforward and easy to understand.
Method 1: Cutting out text from an image
Text is a common reason why we remove photos. It’s not always clear where the text is on the image, and it’s usually only visible on top of a photo.
Open the photo you want to edit
Select the text you want to cut out
Select the tool you want to use – in this case it’s a lasso – or the shortcut Ctrl/Cmd + T
Click once to draw a selection around the text
Press Enter or Ctrl + D to cut the text out
Note: If you want to remove text that is not near the top of the photo, you need to create a mask first. We’ll look at this in the next section.
Adobe Photoshop Elements also has the same lasso tool in the selection tool bar. The tool resembles an upside-down ‘C’ shape, which we will use to select the text.
Method 2: Using a ‘background stamp’ to remove text
This is a variation on the previous method, where we removed the text by using a tool to select around the text. You can, in essence, use a tool to select the surrounding area of the photo instead of the text.
Open the photo you want to edit
Select the text you want to remove
Select the tool you want to use – in this case it’s a lasso – or the shortcut Ctrl/Cmd + T

Select Background from the toolbox
Click on the image itself
Click OK to create a new background mask. A mask is a layer masking all the other layers but the background. This means you can edit the area around the text without affecting the text itself

Reverse osmosis (RO) desalination plants are established for recovering fresh water from seawater and desalting brackish water. However, the total energy consumption associated with desalination is still high, due to the high thermal and electrical cost of membrane operation. This paper studies the energy cost of a RO desalination plant with typical water desalination and brackish water desalination capacities.
