The film was the last outing of Om Puri as the Inspector Vidhi, after 11 years. It also marks the return of the actor to Hindi cinema after a long break. Chunka Joshi makes a comeback to Bollywood after a gap of about eight years. Karan Rudy plays the villain. The film was directed by Neeraj Pandey and produced by Aditya Chopra. The story was written by Karan Johar, Meera Syal and Bhushan Kumar. It is set in the drama that takes place in Mumbai.

Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai’s release date moved around several times, from 1 May to 25 June 2002, from 1 July to 26 July 2002, from 30 July to 20 August 2002 and finally on 28 August 2002. Media outlets reported that an announcement was made on July 20, 2002, that the film would hit the big screen on August 28, 2002, but on July 25, 2002, as reported by Box Office India, Aditya Chopra had announced its release on August 28, 2002. The film released to positive reviews, whereas the soundtrack album was a commercial success. The film was also made available to buy on VCD.[6]

The film was the first Bollywood film to be released on DVD along with unlimited digital downloads in India. It was released for the first time on DVD on April 20, 2003 in all stores in India. It was available online for purchase as well on the Yash Raj Films’ website. The film’s DVD release date in the United States was set for July 11, 2003 and went on to become a blockbuster and the fifth highest-grossing film of 2003.[7]

The film was premiered at the 43rd International Film Festival of India on 7 November 2001. Padmarajan had initially planned to make the film in 1995, but dropped the idea. It did not work out, because then, Karan Johar was interested in this story. By 2003, Johar was ready to undertake the project himself. He became interested in the story after the success of the musical comedy Bombay Dreams. The Spanish filmmaker Antonio Banderas was interested in the project as well. The actors were drawn to the script because of its family-oriented theme.
